Who am I?

Who am I
Alone at night
With just thoughts by my side
And only darkness in sight

Who am I
In the echoes of quiet
Just my breath I’m aware of
And no one else’s

Who am I
When no one is looking
Away from prying eyes
Just me and my being

Who am I
When the world is asleep
And I am wide awake
With the sound of my heartbeat

Am I a poet or a writer?
A fraud or a genius?
Am I just the right amount of nice?
Too candid or too serious?

Am I a girl or a woman?
A sister or a friend?
A tiny speck of dust?
To be blown away and forgotten?

Am I everyone I hate in the day
Or the only one I love at night
Or just no one, really
Who am I?

Who am I beyond these roles
And mere descriptions
Apart from titles and goals
Beyond choices and decisions?

Do any of these words define
The soul behind these eyes of mine
That is the answer behind the question
Who am I?
